There is no faster way to receive news of gold price updates than to watch them on a real-time, server push, BullionVault chart.
Please allow a moment for your chart application to load. If you are trading actively it is a good idea to maintain a separate browser session for monitoring charts.
In normal web browsing your computer asks for data and waits for the response, which it displays in your browser - like Internet Explorer - when it gets it. A server computer reacts to your request by sending data, and breaks the connection with you immediately after the data is sent, so each request is a single hit. If that data is dynamic - like a price chart - it is subsequently refreshed by your computer issuing another request a minute or two afterwards.
This method of updating is called "polling" - or "client-pull" - and is the usual internet way. in fact the world wide web was designed entirely for the purpose of client pull.
But this "client-pull" technique cannot tell you about changes as they happen in the market, because your computer is in total control of the timing. To tell you when something happens in real time you need to use a very different technique called "server-push", and that's needed by gold buyers seeking the split second trade timing we want you to enjoy.
Server push was not a part of the original world wide web. It was bolted on after the web became very popular. It requires connections to the client computer (yours) to be kept open.
Unfortunately because of the many persistent connections which it requires to be kept open with different customers server-push is much more demanding on web-servers, and people being what they are many users who find a useful service leave their computer connected to it all day and eventually overload the servers with open connections.
This is why it is almost impossible to find server push pricing services on the web; not just for gold but for everything.
But BullionVault does use server-push, with a small compromise. To save ourselves from overload we break the connection with you after a while and revert your chart to polling. We believe this is a happy middle ground which you will usually not notice. When you come back after doing something more interesting than watching every tick on the gold price you will notice there is no horizontal line cutting the price axes. This means we have cut the connection and your chart is currently updating by less intensive polling.
All you have to do is press 'RealTime' and 'Start Session' to start up a new real-time connection, which will persist for a while - allowing you to trade on the most up-to-date information possible. We modify how long we keep the open connection depending upon how busy the servers are.
In order to work when you are not logged in (and when the system does not know your time-zone) the charting system reads your own computer's operating system settings for your time-zone. You need to view your operating system to modify your chart's timing.
